In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, without initially provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
