In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
